The one with the extra mile…

Well today was hopefully one of my last days at the Mayo….
I got there are 7am… (yea- had to get up at 5)… and had an intense 2 hour lactose intolerance test which I do not know the results of yet…. after a quick 20 minute nap in the “quiet room” I went to see the sleep study dr who is also a psychiatrist… he said it did not sound like a sleep disorder which is great because I was not thrilled with the idea of a cpap machine… so no sleep study for me…. his other recommendation was to up a med that I take but I am not wild about that so for now I am going to put that suggestion on the back burner…. last I met with a TMJ specialist which I was really excited about and in the end provided the most info and what I think is the best guess as to what is going on…. basically- I have been grinding my teeth at night for the last 20 years and have worn a mouthguard for the last 15… I have noticed in the last year or two that I have usually have my jaw in a constant clenched state and I have to remind myself to release it….. so he chatted with me for an hour and then did an exam and said he thinks that I has myofacial pain (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/myofascial-pain-syndrome/DS01042) – it usually occurs in women during their reproductive years…. the constant flex in my jaw muscles which run up the side of your head can be causing the headaches…. he recommended physical therapy to learn to not clench all the time, along with a splint that I will have to wear at all times except when I eat, and acupuncture to get the muscles to relax. So I was fitted for a splint which I wont get until August :( and I am going to start PT after the 4th and start acupuncture next week (the neurologist also recommended acupuncture if it is a chronic daily headache so hopefully this will help)… if after a couple months I don’t see improvement then we may have to venture into medication or other things but I am hoping we don’t get to that point. As far as the pain in my left sinus- unfortunately the ENT at the Mayo said they never would of operated on my sinus because it can cause scar tissue and make the issue worst…. and the bummer is that I think it did that again… so I am just going to have to grin and bear it because surgery wont do anything at this point… I am still kind of hoping that since she cut down bone that it is still healing and will eventually get better….. so thats the long version of it all- sorry to bore you all…. and I know these issues are small and people have much bigger issues…. that being said… please keep Glen’s college pitching coach- T.O. in your prayers as he undergoes a battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia- he needs way more prayers than I do!

In running news… I ran my furthest distance Saturday… 14 miles… (only one mile more than I have ever ran) And it was a struggle… Lots of hills, humid, and my right calf was killing me but I pulled it off! Truth be told… Sometimes I don’t know how I’ll be able to run 26 miles!!!
I am running in the Twin Cities in Motions “Red, White, & Boom” half marathon on the 4th of July… I am handing out free registration codes for “fifteens 5k” if you see me running… I’ll be in a gray #PMKI tank with short blonde hair… Ask me for a code!
After that…. No more races until the Marathon…. Nerve racking!!

The one where I was still at Mayo….

In case you are wondering…..

On the second day at Mayo I saw the allergist who said the only thing I was slightly allergic to is dust mite so I got a dust mite cover for the bed and am supposed to have someone do the dusting and vacuuming for me…. but that is sure as heck not going to happen so I will probably just wear a mask when I vacumm. I then saw an oral surgeon who confirmed that my TMJ joints looks good but the muscles around them are very tight and sore- probably from the night grinding. Then off to the eye dr who did a thorough workup on my eyes and determined that they are perfect! I then met with Dr. Wilson to go over all my blood and urine results…. everything was great- HDL and LDL cholesterol is at 58 which is great and all my proteins and immunity is great. The only thing they are rechecking is my lactose intolerance- the test came back indeterminite so we will do a more precise test next week. Lastly I saw the Neurologist who did a workup and talked with me for a long time- after an hour he determined that he thinks as of right now that it is “chronic daily headaches” and suggested a few meds and other remedies but also mentioned that I could try accupuncture- so I am going to give that a try before I venture into meds, etc.
Next tuesday is kind of a big day- I see the TMJ DR. (every dr I have seen so far believes my teeth grinding is playing a role in all of this) and the Sleep Study ( most of the dr. also believe that I may not be getting good sleep which also could be the cause) and the more precise lactose test. Hopefully by the end of next week we should have a much better idea of what is causing this. More than likely it is not one thing but a combination of a few things….. once we figure them all out we can go about treating and hopefully preventing these headaches, fatigue, and pain from coming anymore.

Anyways- that is all for now… off to run…. lots to think about :)

The one with the beer bong…

Distance makes the heart grow fonder…. was that true for you peeps? Sorry I have been away so long… truth be told I don’t even know what happened…. After my second sinus surgery in May I slowly eased back into running only to have my sinus symptoms start again at the end of May which made running very difficult- I had little to no energy. Some how after 6 days of not running I managed to pull off a half marathon up in Duluth at Grandmas in a great time…. 1:46- 8:05 per mile. I went up there with my cousin Bekah and her hubby Jeff…..met some friends on Friday….we had a blast…. Then got up at 4am on saturday- boarded the bus half way to Two Harbors and ran back to Duluth. It was so much fun… the course is beautful and flat and the crowd was AMAZING- even college kids who offer you a beer bong while you run :) … I didn’t take them up on their offer but some people did! I would highly recommend the race!! I think we will all be back again next year!

Since the race a friend hooked me up with an amazing doctor at the Mayo Clinic and he set me up with a bunch of doctors to see if we can figure out what on earth is causing me to feel like this… so I am writing this from a Hilton in Rochester after my first day at the Mayo Clinic….I started my day at 7:30am with Dr. Walt Wilson… the Dr. that my friend set me up with. We chatted for a while and he did an in depth exam which all was normal. From there I had a urinary test which was also normal. Followed by a lot of blood tests :( not fun but the good news is that they were all normal as well. He also rechecked my lactose intolerance and gluten and we should have those results tomorrow. I then had an MRI, followed by a CT, and x rays…. all of which showed no abnormalities which is great as well. I ended my day by seeing an ENT which specializes in sinus headaches… she reviewed my MRI and CT’s from before and after the surgeries as well as the ones today and said that I have a hypoplastic left maxilary sinus which basically means that my left sinus in unusually small but that this is the case in 1/3 of people and most never show symptoms. From what she can see in the MRI, I am still getting air into the sinus so it is not blocked. They basically told me that this is something that they would not of performed surgery on because opening the sinus can lead to scar tissue which makes it worst- which was tough to hear but it is what it is. Basically she believes that I am in fact not having sinus infections but rather a form of headache variant or migraine variant which is also what Walt thought. So tomorrow I see an allergist, and oral surgeon to rule out allergies and jaw issues causing the headaches since I grind my teeth at night and had TMJ with both girls, and an eye dr to make sure it is not stemming from my eyes. Then I come back down here next tuesday to see their TMJ specialist and their sleep study consultant…. they may want to do a sleep study to rule out sleep apnea as a cause for the headaches….. then finally I will see a Neurologist- which we are still trying to schedule…. the Neuro is the most important but before I see them and they verify the headaches or migraines we need to see all the others to rule the rest out!  So- we are on the road to figuring it all out- and the good news today is that we ruled out a lot of the bad things that would of required surgery or have a scary outcome… now we just need to keep narrowing it down.

Thats all for now….
